Ric O'Berry Dolphin Activist

I’d like to introduce a brave human being who wanted change, and did something about it.  He saw cruelty and brutality that was going on and created awareness so others could see too.  His name is Ric O’Berry, a former dolphin trainer turned dolphin activist.  Ric was a dolphin trainer for the show Flipper for many years.  The show had five dolphins total, but the star was a dolphin named Kathy.  According to Ric Kathy committed suicide in his arms.  Since dolphins are mammals they control their air supply.  Ric saw Kathy look at him while she took her last breath and voluntarily closed her air supply.  At that point Ric realized the cruelty behind capturing and training dolphins for human pleasure.  He then went around to islands releasing captive dolphins, leading Ric to start the “Dolphin Project” in 1970.  To continue awareness Ric decided to expose an area of Japan that brutally trap and slaughter over 23,000 dolphins a year with the Academy Award winning film The Cove.  Ric’s written two books on dolphin slaughter and continues fighting to free dolphins for over 38 years by spreading awareness on dolphin slaughter.

  1. I enjoyed reading your blog. It is very nice to know that there is someone out there that cares about dolphins. When i buy tuna I make sure it says, "Dolphin safe". This way I know no dolphin was hurt :)

  2. The Cove was a really good documentary. I'll admit, I cried when he said Kathy died in his arms.

  3. I actually saw the documentary not to long ago. I remember seeing his son go under cover to try to save and free some dolphins. I was so sad when I watched it that it got me a little depressed.

  4. This story you shared is so sad but it's also really inspiring that there is someone out there that is doing everything he can for dolphins. I think there should be more people like him in the world to prevent animal cruelty because it is a horrible and unnecessary thing!
